Minnesota’s use of “whiskey plates” has come to an end for all intents and purposes.
Just this week, Minnesota enacted a new law that drastically changes the requirements for drivers to display “whiskey plates.” Now anyone required to display whiskey plates in order to drive can avoid the requirement and use real license plates by (1) enrolling into the Ignition Interlock Program, and (2) paying a $100 fee. This new law will also apply to individuals already subject to a license plate order. That means if you currently have whiskey plates on your vehicle and you are enrolled in the Ignition Interlock Program, you can get your real plates back on your vehicle immediately.
